Electronic Hardness Testing

Most commonly this is carried out on aluminum cylinder heads & blocks as an initial first step to determining whether the components have the required material hardness to be used again.  The main reason an aluminum cylinder head or block would lose hardness or integrity is due to excessive overheating.

Our specialist testing unit uses an impact sensor, which is rebounded against the face of the head or block being tested, at multiple locations.  The sensors kinetic energy is absorbed and the amount of speed reduction is measured and converted to specific hardness values.

Once tested we compare the results with the manufacturer’s specifications and then determine whether we can proceed with the rebuild or whether a new cylinder head or block is required.
